History of District Hamirpur


Hamirpur falls exclusively in Shiwalik range. The district in north is bounded by the river Beas which separates it from Kangra district. In the west of Hamirpur lies Una district and in the south Bilaspur district, in the east Seer khad separates it from the Mandi district.

  •  According to Purana and Panini's Ashtadhyai during Mahabharata period Hamirpur was part of the old Jalandhar- Trigarta Empire. Before Hamir Chand, a Katoch ruler of Kangra, this area was under the control of Ranas, Mewa, Mehalta and Dhatwal. When Katoch dynasty became power under Hamir Chand (1700 to 1747 AD) he put all these Ranas under his control.
  •  He built the fort Hamirpur.
  •  Sansar Chand made "Sujanpur Tira" his capital and constructed palaces and temples at this place.During this time he attacked Mandi state and made Raja Ishwari Sen a prisoner for 12 years at Nadaun. 
  • When chief of hill states joined hand with Amar Singh Thapa against Sansar Chand the army fought against Sansar Chand at Mahal Morian in Hamirpur in Bhoranj Tehsil, in 1806. Gurkhas were defeated in 1809 AD by Maharaja Ranjit Singh on the request of Sansar Chand. For this Ranjit Singh got Kangra fort and 66 villages. Sikh maintained sovereignty over Kangra and Hamirpur till 1846 when they were defeated by British army in first Anglo-Sikh war. 
  • British made Kangra a district which includes Hamirpur, Kullu and Lahaul and Spiti. Naudan was made Tehsil headquarters. In 1868 Tehsil headquarters was changed from Nadaun to Hamirpur. In 1888 the Palampur Tehsil was created by merging part of Hamirpur and Kangra district.
  •  Nadaun: At present it is part of Hamirpur. Earlier it was part of princely state of Kangra. The Jagir of Nadaun was granted to Raja sir Jodhbir Chand, son of Raja Sansar Chand.
  • Bulleh Shah mentions Nadaun as city of innocent, who has written famous saying about Nadaun "Aaye Nadaun Jay Kaun". Nadaun is famous for Bilkaleshwar temple founded by Pandavas.
