History of District Una


  • Una district is in the south-western part of Himachal Pradesh. It is bounded by Kangra in the North, Hamirpur in the east and Bilaspur in the south and Hoshiyarpur of Punjab in the west. 
  • Una is bounded by river Beas on the north and the river Satluj in the east. The Swan river which is seasonal flow right across the Jaswan valley (Doon) toward south until it submerges in the Satluj near Anandpur. The Swan River is called as "Sorrow of Una". 
  • Sub-Himalayan hills in Una commonly known as "Solah Singhi or Jaswan Dhar", which starts at "Talwara" on the Beas, Passing southward, its height increases steadily until it reach to its highest point at Bharwain.
  •  River Beas forms border between Una and Kangra district. 
  • Erstwhile princely state Jaswan and Kutlehar which were part of Katoch Dynasty of Kangra later emerged independent states out of Kangra. Present Una is formally constituted by these two princely states. 
  • Government has established fruit demonstrations farm at Saloh. 
  •  Poultry farm at Anjoli and three milk chilling centres each at Jhalera, Bangana and Pubbowal. 
  • Dera Baba Rudru: It was established by Baba Rudrananda in the Nari village on the main Una-Amb road. The saint was considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is considered that there is some spiritual bondage between the five Peepal trees and the Vibhuti (Holy ashes) here. It is said that the people who are affected by snake bite are treated by giving a dose of Vibhuti and made him lie under the five Peepal trees.
