History Of Kinnaur District (Himachal Pradesh)


  •  Kinnaur is located in north-eastern part of Himachal. Kinnaur shares eastern border with Tibet and Zanskar mountains form the international boundary between Tibet and Kinnaur Border starts at a point "Parechhu" and reaches by Shipkila pass to Chor Gad valley in east. 
  • In south and south-east it has Uttarakhand and on western side lays Shimla district. On its north and north-west side is Lahaul and Spiti and Kullu touches it from the west.
  •  The district is surrounded by three mountain ranges i.e. Zanskar Mountain in the East, the Great Himalaya which starts from North-west to south-East and Dhauladhar range from southern boundary of district. 
  • Shila, Leo Phargil and Parasal are highest peaks in Kinnaur lie in Zanskar range. Other highest peak Raldang or Kinner Kailash lies in the Greater Himalayas. 
HISTORY OF KINNAUR DISTRICT

  • Kinnaur had been part of the Rampur Bushahr state. In mythological and legendry account the Kinners are described as distinct race of Demigods with horse's head and human body. Kinnaur is called as "Khunu" by Tibetans and in Leh this area is called Maon. Maon has also been the name of Bushahr state. 
  • The five Pandava brothers are said to have passed part of their 12 years exile in Kinnaur. Kalidas mentioned about Kinner in his famous book "Kumarasmbhava". In "Vayu Purana" the Kinners are said to be the inhabitants of the mountain "Mahand". 
  • Khasas, Aryans, Kanaits, Jads are people living in Kinnaur. Bhoteas are people who live in Indo-Tibetan border, speak dialects akin to Tibetans. 
  • Note: Chronological order of Rajas of Kinnaur is discussed in Shimla District as Kinnaur and Shimla were part of princely state of Rampur Bushahr. 
Marriage customs in Kinnaur. 

  •  Janekhang or Janetang: It is common arranged marriage. 
  • Damchalshish or Damtangshish or Jushish: It is love marriage. 
  •  Darosh or Dub-Dub or Nymasha Depang: Is marriage my forceful or consented capture.
