Space research activities in our country started in the year 1960s. Rakesh Sharma has the distinction of becoming the country's first astronaut. He left for space on 3 April 1984 from the Soviet Union's spacecraft Soyuz T-11. He returned to Earth after spending 7 days, 21 hours and 40 minutes in the space station Salyut-7. Rakesh was born on 13 January 1949 in Patiala, Punjab. Along with Rakesh Sharma, another Indian Ravish Malhotra was also selected for space travel. Both were brave and experienced pilots of the Air Force. However, after training, Rakesh Sharma was selected to fly into space. Before space travel, he trained in Moscow for two years. He was trained at the Yuri Gagarin Space Center in Moscow. He completed the space journey with two Russian astronauts.

Kalpana Chawla has a special place in the history of her country as the first woman of Indian origin to go into space. Kalpana Chawla was part of a team of six astronauts in the space mission sent by NASA on 19 November 1997. Kalpana made a name for herself by traveling to space on the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-97. On January 16, 2003, Kalpana Chawla embarked on a second space trip via Columbia's STS-107, but Kalpana Chawla died due to an accident during this mission. Kalpana Chawla was born on 17 March 1962 in Karnal, Haryana. She went to America after engineering from Punjab.

Sunita Williams is the second woman of Indian origin to go into space through the American space agency NASA. Sunita Williams has set a world record for living in space for 195 days as an astronaut. Sunita's father Deepak Pandya was originally from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Sunita's father had moved from Ahmedabad to Boston, USA in the year 1958 and settled there. Sunita's father was a doctor in America. Sunita was born on September 19, 1965 in the city of Euclid (Cleveland) in the state of Ohio, USA. Sunita graduated in Physical Science from the United Nations Naval Academy in the year 1987 after passing high school from Massachusetts. After this, in 1995, he did MS in Engineering Management from Florida Institute of Technology. In the year 2006, Sunita Williams flew into space for the first time. The special thing is that Sunita is the first woman to have experience of two space missions, who has also made a record of space walk for 50 hours. This walk was in the outer space of the Space Shuttle. Sunita stayed in space for a total of 321 days, 17 hours and 15 minutes in various missions. Honoring the achievements of Sunita Williams, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Bhushan in the year 2008.
Sirisha Bandla Birthplace : Guntur
India-born astronaut Sirisha Bandla was part of a six-person crew that went into space on Virgin Galactic company's VSS Unity spaceship. Virgin Galactic is a British-American spaceflight company. This journey from earth to space and then back was 70 minutes. However, this flight of Sirisha was somewhat different from the space mission of Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams.
