Eminent Indian-American mathematician and statistician CR Rao will be awarded the 2023 International Prize in Statistics. This award is equivalent to the Nobel Prize in this field. His work 75 years ago revolutionized statistical thinking.

Indian-American mathematician and statistician Kalyampudi Radhakrishna Rao will be awarded the 2023 International Prize in Statistics. This award is equivalent to the Nobel Prize in this field. His work 75 years ago revolutionized statistical thinking. The International Prize in Statistics Foundation said in a statement that Rao's work 75 years ago had a profound impact on science. CR Rao, who is now 102 years old, will be honored with an award of USD 80,000 this July at the biennial International Institute of Statistics World Statistical Congress in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

CR Rao was born in a Telugu family in Hadagali, Karnataka. His schooling was completed in Gudur, Nuzvid, Nandigama and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. He did his MSc in Mathematics from Andhra University and MA in Statistics from Calcutta University in 1943. He earned his PhD from King's College, Cambridge University. He also obtained a DSc degree from Cambridge in 1965.

Rao first worked at the Indian Statistical Institute and the Anthropological Museum in Cambridge. He later held several important positions, including Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, Jawaharlal Nehru Professor and National Professor in India, University Professor and Eberly Professor and Chair of Statistics at the University of Pittsburgh, and Director of the Center for Multivariate Analysis at the State of Pennsylvania. He is currently Professor Emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo. Rao has received many honors. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India (1968) and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
